I'll preface this by saying, if this has been covered by someone else and I don't remember, or if this is inappropriate for the community, I apologise and welcome its deletion.
So. I was thinking.
The BSC are always on edge when Logan sits in on meetings because they can't talk about BRAS in front of him... but what about, even more taboo than BRAS, PERIODS? For a series about thirteen-year-old girls, I can't remember one single, solitary time they dealt with the topic of periods. Can anyone set me right on that? I realise that's more Judy Blume's literary territory, but come on, surely it would be part of their lives. Given our detailed knowledge of the girls' personality traits, I guess it's easy to predict their reactions to Getting It.
Kristy: Abject horror that stuff is coming out of her and she can't CONTROL it, followed by evil glee at grossing out her brothers with off-handed comments about it. 'Hey Charlie, could you give me a lift to the store? I need to buy TAMPONS because my PERIOD just started. I can put a towel on the seat if you're worried!'
Mary Anne: Cries. Of course. But then is happy because it's Becoming a Woman. Cries some more because her mother can't share this Special Time. Has to improvise with a washcloth folded into her knickers while searching for maxi pads, which Sharon has stashed in the salad crisper drawer.
Dawn: Abject horror at the bloody colour and meaty smell. Her periods should smell like VEGETABLES. Goes on a campaign against environmentally unfriendly disposable pads and tampons, and insists on telling people who would really rather not hear why she uses washable, reusable sea-sponge tampons and fabric pads. 'Tampons choke baby dolphins! Also, I'm very individual.'
Claudia: Basically okay with it, but when Janine tries awkwardly but kindly to explain to her how and why periods happen, using big words like endometrium, snaps at her like a little bitch. Considers making moon paintings before deciding that is just too icky, and eating some more chocolate.
Stacey: Oh, Stacey got her period in New York. She was very sophisticated about it and totally not grossed out by the blood because she has to stick her finger every day to test her blood sugar - eeeeeeeeeeeew. At least she never got her period while sharing a double bed with Laine at a sleepover.
Mallory: Mallory has the worst luck in the world, so I'm guessing endometriosis and the kind of cramps that necessitate a day off from school to lie in bed curled around a hot water bottle trying not to weep.
Jessi: Doesn't menstruate for years as she is keeping thin for ballet. |

So I just read this book and was surprised at how quickly I finished it. Seriously, when I was a kid it took me forever to get through one of these suckers and it took me half an hour just now. Awesome.
I frequent this community every single day--seriously. I love reading the snarks here, and hopefully this one will live up to my favorites!

Hello all! I’m back with my second snark. If you read my first snark, Stacey vs. Claudia, *cough*shamelessplug!*cough* you might know that I love a good BSC fight. So, upon finding my copy of KATBP, (strewn on the floor behind my bookcase, whoops!) I decided this would be the perfect book to snark. It’s full of BSC fights, and as a wonderful bonus, we get to see the BSC actually fail at something. I know, it only happens once every 79 books or so, so this is something pretty special. Ready? Hello, I plan on doing a full-out snark at some point, but first I wanted to bring up something that has puzzled me for some time.
Back in "Kristy's Great Idea," Claudia draws the logo that they end up using as their official club logo. Given Claudia's track record with spelling (and still, they let her paint giant signs to hang on houses), is anyone surprised that "Baby-Sitters" came out correctly? I'm fairly certain that I remember her saying that she "babbysat" in the club notebook on more than one occasion. |

Nice cover. Some of those bathing suits aren't very flattering. Stacey looks like, if she went to a spa, they would tell her to work on her "problem areas." Mallory, on the other hand, looks pretty good for an awkward eleven-year-old.

Previously on The Young and The Clueless... Chapters 1-4.
Chapter 5.
Mary Anne angsts over the tone of her postcard to Logan. She doesn't want him to think she's miserable without him, but she doesn't want to sound like Sea City beats the pants off Stoneybrook either (even though I think it totally does, because Gurber Garden >>>> Burger Bite and we all know it). Then she puts the card at the bottom of her underwear drawer for reasons that aren't really explained (which is fine with me).
Mary Anne goes downstairs to have breakfast with the Pikes, and oh my stars, it's an ordeal the likes of which we've never seen!
Mr. Pike was flipping pancakes in what looked like the world’s largest frying pan, while Mal was busily making gallons of orange juice. Vanessa buttered a mountain of raisin-bread toast while I microwaved the bacon. Stacey put the triplets to work setting the table, watching to make sure that everybody got the right amount of silverware. You’d be surprised how much planning goes into breakfast for twelve people. Luckily, Mrs. Pike is very organized (unlike my stepmother) and had everything pretty much under control.
Yes, I can only imagine the clusterfuck that would come from Sharon trying to cook tofu waffles for 12 people. I'm thinking it'd involve a couple bottles of Trader Joe's wine, a crack pipe, a couple impromptu naps and hedge clippers.
Also, microwaved bacon is gross. And that's not because I'm a militant vegetarian like Dawn; it sticks to the paper towels and is all limp and there's not even any delicious grease left over to season your famous fried rice later.
Time to discuss today's plans. Mallory doesn't want to go to the beach because it's overcast and she wants to get a tan. "Maybe I'll find a cute guy to impress," she says, grinning creepily at Mary Anne and Stacey. Can someone point me in the direction of the best place to upchuck my buttered raisin toast?
Anyway, Stacey takes the triplets and Nicky to the beach, and Mary Anne heads out to the main drag with Louie, Pointless Margo, The Ugly One and Vanessa Barrett Browning. After checking in to make sure Gurber Garden and The Candy Kitchen are still standing, they end up at the Ice Cream Palace. Mary Anne notices a guy behind the counter that is ogling either Vanessa or Mallory. She also takes notice that he's about 12. IN WHAT UNIVERSE ARE KIDS ALLOWED TO WORK BEFORE THE AGE OF 16!!?#$ The only place I can think of that hires younger than that in the US is McD's, and even then, you have to be 14 years old and you can only work like a half-hour a day.
Claire has to go and jack everything up when she spills her chocolate soda all over the place. Mallory and Chris, the minor working behind the counter, go for a roll of paper towels at the same time and bump heads, "like a scene out of a Three Stooges movie." Then Mallory goes to poke Chris in the eyes, but he blocks her by putting his hand up against his face, and then she reaches around and bops him on the head with her fist, going "Nyuck-nyuck-nyuck!" Or not.
Claire pitches a fit about wanting another soda. Chris says "Soitantly!" and fixes another. Then he proceeds to add some extra whipped cream to Mal's strawberry sundae, which... yeah, but anyway, the whipped cream machine (???) goes on the fritz and starts shooting whipped cream everywhere and HIJINKS ENSUE. Mary Anne is understandably ready to get the hell out of the Ice Cream Palace, especially when Vanessa starts crying for another unexplained reason. Shut up, Vanessa.

After the success of my first snark, I've been motivated to write my second snark! This one tackles *GASP* censorship and politics. So ahh... keep it civil in the comments. :) This book was a favorite when I bought it at age 11, and we're going to see how I like it now that I'm 23. :)
It's long, because I talk too much, and I hope it's moderately amusing...
